Summer Vacation in Norway - Part 2

July 10: Horten-Oslo (ferry and train)
The day after the race started with a big breakfast and a short dip in the fjord before we travelled back to Marit and Jabus’ place. I am glad that we had an easy day – my body didn’t seem quite ready for more exercise! Instead, we watched cycling and soccer (and we watched Clara giggle at her own reflection in the mirror), grilled some fish and vegetables, and just relaxed.

July 11: Oslo-Bergen by train, Bergen-Bergen Camping (20 km)
We started the day with a lazy breakfast and a bit more visiting with Marit, Jabus, and Clara, and headed off on our loaded bikes at around 10:15 to catch the train from the central station. We tried to follow a different superhighway, but eventually found ourselves back on known trails. We made it to the station well before the train, so we were able to stock up on food and get the bikes ready for the awkward process of stuffing them into the café car. There were a few more bikes this time – including two fancy folding tandems which the conductor thought were a bit big, but they managed to fit. The train ride takes 7 hours, and it is indeed worthy of the renown it has. The mountain vistas – the train goes up to 1220 m – as well as the rivers, farmland, and lakes, were really incredible, even on a rainy day. Although it wasn’t raining when we began to cycle from the station, it soon turned into a downpour, and we were quite soaked as we struggled to follow the cycling path to Åsane, Nyborg, and the campground. We are a bit wet and tired, but the tent is cozy and we have our fingers crossed for better weather tomorrow.
