South Africa - Days 7-9

April 3, 2015
There was a bachelor’s party planned, so Dražen needed to get up early and get ready for hiking. While the men went off for their fun (which sounded like it involved more eating than hiking), I had a fairly relaxing morning, went out for a run, hung out a bit with women and children, and then went to the beach with Eriane + Ida + kids.

We played in the waves and I had my first complete dip in the Indian Ocean. There were a few men fishing for sharks, and we saw them get a bite, but the shark got away. The did manage to catch a few larger bait fish with a net (while standing in the water), though. On the way back up from the beach, we saw lots of dolphins. After lunch, the others went off to the store and I had about 5 minutes of quiet life contemplation before the men came back. We played some pool and then went to the pre-wedding party.

On the way to the braai, we encountered a herd of zebras, which was also quite exciting. The braai was fun – lots of good food and company – and I’m now looking forward to the wedding!

This is a brief, somewhat delayed report, so a few details might be missing. The morning started with a warm walk back from the other house and a lazy breakfast. Ole was getting ready for long run on the beach and Dražen and I accompanied him for about 5km before we turned around and let him continue alone (on what turned out to be a very long run). We got caught in a bit of a downpour after we came up from the beach, but it was an otherwise nice outing.

We then made a grocery/gas outing to Mosselbaai on a busy Saturday morning. When we returned, we found that there wasn’t much time before we needed to pick up Marit’s uncle/family and drive to the wedding.

The wedding was on the beach at Vleesbaai, which is a lovely sand beach in a rocky cove. As we arrived, we got to see a shark being caught and released. It was a surprising large shark, and the gentlemen who caught it seemed very pleased.

The ceremony was performed on the beach under cloudy skies (and I got to hold Ingrid, who was very quiet). Marit was beautiful in her dress with a colorful bouquet, there were dolphins swimming by, and the priest kept his sermon short and sweet. The first raindrops fell after the ceremony, so we didn’t waste too much time before driving to the reception.

The reception was at the same restaurant as the braai, and it was a lively dinner with good company, speeches, and lots of dancing. Dražen served as chauffeur, which was very kind, and everyone made it back safely.

Dražen picked me up from the other house this morning so that I didn’t have to walk back in my nice shoes. It was a sunny morning and the ground was surprisingly dry after yesterday’s rain. After a lazy breakfast, Reza and Dražen and I went on a bird watching walk. We saw some black necked herons and partridges, but it ended up being a nice walk rather than a birding expedition.

The general laziness continued for a while before we got our acts together to go to the beach, where Dominik and I first went on a long walk in the wrong direction, but eventually found the rest of the group. There was lots of playing in the waves, which were actually a little bit dangerous due to the way that they were breaking and the strong currents, but not one incurred any injuries that were worse than a mouthful of salt water.

Ole and his sons had a good time building an elaborate breakwater in the sand and we hung out until it was time to shower for another braai with Jabus’ parents and family. We had a nice evening there with lots of food, and I think everyone is tired from the waves and heavy digestion.
